Veteran Barcelona defender remains unfazed about his contractual situation at Barcelona

FC Barcelona, despite mixed results in their recent outings, have had a very good start to the season. Much of their impressive start to the campaign will be attributed to the goals that they have scored so far and there is merit to that claim.

However, it must be remembered that this run would not have been possible without the contributions of Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi. The center-back partnership has exceeded expectations with their performances so far.

The former, in particular, has defied his advancing age and shown an incredible level of performance this season. On current form, he should undoubtedly be considered one of the best players in his position in all of Europe.

However, it is worth noting that Íñigo Martínez’s contract with Barcelona is set to expire at the end of the season, and there has been no official word regarding a potential renewal. While there seems to be no immediate urgency, one would expect the club to initiate talks when the time is right.

When asked about his future, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano, the Spanish veteran made it clear that his focus remains entirely on his performances. He stated:

“I’m not focused on that… if we extend, very good. If not, well, I’ll say that I spent two years at Barça”. “My full focus is on the pitch.”

One would assume that there is a clause in his contract that would see him extend his contract automatically should a set of targets be achieved. Even otherwise, it is a no-brainer for Barcelona to sign the player to a new deal.
