Newcastle United have some big contract decisions to make ahead of the summer of 2025.
Various first-team players at St James’ Park are in the final year of their contract, with Newcastle United potentially on course to lose as many as seven senior players.
It is unlikely that Martin Dubravka will get a new Newcastle United contract, while it has been claimed that Toon officials are hoping to extend Emil Krafth’s deal.
And the same goes for Fabian Schar, who has been very vocal about his desire to remain at St James’ Park.

Schar recently told the Swiss media that he wants to stay at Newcastle, with the 32-year-old continuing to play the best football of his career.
However, a new contract might not be completely straightforward for Toon officials. Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle may need to offer Schar a multi-year deal to keep him at St James’ Park.
Given how well he continues to play, he absolutely deserves that – even if he is the wrong side of 30.
Fabian Schar drops fresh hint over Newcastle future
Now Schar has reaffirmed his desire to continue playing for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United, after making his 200th appearance for the club in the 2-0 defeat to West Ham.

The centre-back wrote on Instagram: “I could never have imagined to play 200 games for this incredible football club @nufc !!! Proud to put on the black and white stripes every week and play in front of you all.. Here‘s to many more.”
Newcastle have to retain Schar
Schar says ‘here’s to many more’ appearances for Newcastle United. Well, that will only be possible if he is awarded a contract extension.
But there should be no hesitation over Schar’s Toon future. While he turns 33 in December, he is still an immensely valuable player on Tyneside.
He is a centre-back who has never relied on pace, while his ball-playing ability is a weapon that Newcastle United heavily utilise.
Schar can do ‘magical’ things with the ball according to Howe, which makes him a completely unique centre-back.
Letting him go on a free would be disastrous, especially with Newcastle’s centre-back options already stretched.
While someone like Marc Guehi may arrive in 2025 to be Schar’s long-term replacement, the Magpies’ Swiss superstar still has a lot left in the tank and must be retained.
