Steven Gerrard celebrates after scoring for Liverpool against Real Madrid in March 2009
Liverpool and Real Madrid are two of the most successful clubs in the history of European football, winning a combined 21 European Cup titles and 10 UEFA Super Cups. And on Wednesday night, the giants meet for a 12th time.
Liverpool have made the perfect start to the new-look Champions League group stage, winning four games from four. For Madrid on the other hand, a victory is vital as they sit down in 21st position in the standings after a 3-1 home loss to AC Milan last time out.
The matches between the clubs in years gone by have been blockbusters, with three European cup finals, 4-0 wins, and major controversy. But as it stands, the Reds haven’t beat Los Blancos in more than 15 years.

And, ahead of the latest meeting between the old rivals, we look at some of the best goals Liverpool have scored against Madrid...
5: Sadio Mane, Liverpool 1-3 Real Madrid
Looking back now, the 2017/18 Champions League final is a memorable one for the Reds for all the wrong reasons, but that didn’t stop club legend Sadio Mane from writing his name into the history books with a diving effort that levelled the score.
Mane got on the end of a Dejan Lovren header to poke home the goal that gave Liverpool fans hope again in Kyiv.
Ultimately, Madrid went on to win the game and their 13th European Cup through a combination of stunning Gareth Bale strikes and costly Loris Karius mistakes.
4: Darwin Nunez, Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid
Darwin Nunez
In February last year, Darwin Nunez raised the roof off Anfield with an audacious goal inside four minutes of the first leg of the Champions League round-of-16 tie.
The Uruguayan found space in between the Madrid backline to flick a Mohamed Salah pass through his own legs and past a helpless Thibault Courtious in goal.
Liverpool maintained the attack adding another goal soon after, but finished the game with a damaging 5-2 defeat.
3: Yossi Benayounm Real Madrid 0-1 Liverpool
Yossi Benayoun was the hero in Liverpool’s solitary win away at the Bernabeu, back in 2009.
Benayoun rose highest from an in-swinging Fabio Aurelio free-kick to head powerfully past Iker Casillas in the 82nd minute.
Rafa Benitez’s side held out for the win to take the lead back to Anfield in the second leg.
2: Steven Gerrard, Liverpool 4-0 Real Madrid
After a 1-0 win in the first leg, Liverpool completed an unforgettable Champions League victory over the Spanish giants with a 4-0 demolition job at home.
The pick of the goals was captain Steven Gerrard’s second of the night. Ryan Babel beat Sergio Ramos out wide to whip a fast-paced delivery into the box, and Gerrard met the ball by the penalty spot with a crashing side-footed half-volley that arrowed into the top corner.
1: Alan Kennedy, Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid
Liverpool’s greatest ever goal against Real Madrid came in the very first meeting between the two sides, the European Cup final in Paris in 1981.
The game was goalless heading into the final 10 minutes when the Reds' No.3, Alan Kennedy, drove through a gap in the Madrid backline and smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
In a team managed by Bob Paisley, and featuring Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Alan Hansen, it was left-back Kennedy who scored the winner that secured Liverpool’s third European Cup victory.
