Arsenal’s former chief Edu could have decided to leave the club after Evangelos Marinakis has opened talks to buy Vasco da Gama.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the sporting director could be looking to spend more time in his native Brazil.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 4 November Edu has quit Arsenal after agreeing a triple-your-money deal with the group run by Nottingham Forest owner Marinakis.

The ex-Brazil international midfielder returned to the club in 2019 as technical director before transitioning into a sporting director role.

The Telegraph reported on 19 November Marinakis is now in talks to buy a controlling stake in Vasco da Gama, with Edu lined up for a key role with the Brazilian side.

Borson believes the Rio de Janeiro-based outfit could be an interesting team to add to Marinakis’s group.

He told Football Insider: “It seems to fit with the story and give a rationale of why maybe he left.

“I doubt it’s by accident. I guess it’s possible that he wanted to spend more time in Brazil or have a mix at least and liked the idea of a global multi-club situation, especially if there was interest there in involvement in South America as well.

“It makes sense. Clearly, he’s got another job. I don’t think there is any doubt that he’s going to another job.

“It looks like that job is a multi-club Nottingham Forest group. You can see that being an interesting club to add to that model.

“I think one of the biggest issues that people have seen in Europe is to have two very major clubs in the European game that appear to compete.

“Part of the issue that Everton and Roma have got is they are just very big clubs, so which one is going to be the dominant club in that group?

“It makes it easier actually if you have a very big club in South America and a very big club in Europe.

“That makes the equation much easier, so maybe that’s their logic and their rationale.”
