Callum Wilson knows that his Newcastle United future is not in his own hands.
The 32-year-old could be in his final season at St James’ Park, with the striker’s Newcastle United contract due to expire in the summer of 2025.
It has been claimed that Newcastle are unlikely to extend Wilson’s contract, but a final decision will not be made until nearer the time.
Until then, it will be up to Callum Wilson to prove that he should stay at St James’ Park. And that is what he is planning to do, after Wilson returned from injury against West Ham on Monday night.

Now that Wilson is fit again, the next item on his agenda is scoring goals.
And if he can score enough goals between now and the end of the season, he will give the Newcastle United owners a decision to make.
However, Wilson has told the Northern Echo that he knows his future is ‘down to the club’.
“I’m not thinking about it to be honest,” he said.

“You can only focus on the current situation. The first and foremost was getting fit, from there you build on that, stay fit, score your goals and then it’s down to the club on how things progress and like I say, as a striker you score goals and get yourself longevity don’t you?
“I love playing for this club, I joined many years ago and helped the club numerous times throughout the years and I want to be a part of it.
“It’s about getting going and getting out there – as long as I’m on the pitch I’ve no doubt I’ll score goals but it’s about staying on the pitch.”
Wilson’s main concern will be avoiding injury
The Callum Wilson situation is incredibly intriguing.
It feels fair to assume that most Newcastle fans would expect this to be Wilson’s last season at St James’ Park. However, that could change if he starts to score goals.
But that will only happen if he stays fit, which is a big ‘if’ for a lot of supporters. But the club will be hopeful, with Newcastle delaying Wilson’s comeback to ensure he avoided another setback.
The proof will be in the pudding, but Wilson could give the Newcastle owners a very difficult decision to make if he stays fit and scores plenty of goals between now and the end of the season.
Newcastle are looking at alternatives to Callum Wilson
Even if he does find the net on a regular basis, Toon officials will know they need a replacement. Wilson turns 33-years-old in February, while Newcastle need to evolve and freshen up their squad.
They are hoping to do that next year, with Newcastle eyeing a new striker in 2025.
Jonathan David is a target for Newcastle, with his contract also expiring at the end of the season.
Elsewhere, it would not be a shock if Dominic Calvert-Lewin emerged as an option once again, as he too is on course to become a free agent in 2025.
