Frank Lampard set to ignite Leeds United rivalry again after latest Coventry City decision

Frank Lampard is on the brink of becoming the new head coach of Coventry City, with the announcement potentially happening within the next 24 hours. Last week Lampard emerged as the favourite for the job according to bookmakers, and it now appears that the Sky Blues board are prepared to reveal their choice.

Doug King has been conducting due diligence on all potential candidates and interviewees as the club seeks to move forward from the contentious dismissal of Mark Robins. As first reported last week, Lampard was believed to be in advanced discussions with the club, and the ex-Chelsea and Derby coach is now finalising terms before taking over at the CBS Arena.

Lampard hasn't managed since leaving his interim position at Chelsea at the end of the 2022-23 season and is now ready to return to management. The Telegraph suggests that King has ties to Lampard's uncle, Harry Redknapp, and speculates that Lampard could even be at the helm for the home match against Cardiff City this Saturday.

Journalist Alan Nixon also supports the idea of Lampard being appointed and has disclosed that Joe Edwards will be his assistant. He writes: "Coventry City plan to name Frank Lampard as boss today - with old pal Joe Edwards set to join him as his number two."

"Edwards has been out of work since leaving Millwall but was previously part of Team Lampard at Chelsea and Everton.", reports Coventry Live.

"Lampard has been in talks for some time but the target was a debut against Cardiff on Saturday after a difficult double header with Sheffield United and Burnley. Edwards is respected within the game and will play a major role as Lampard leans heavily on him for his input."

Rhys Carr was set to have a chat with King today to determine if he needs to stay at the helm for the weekend. This follows Steven Pressley endorsing Lampard as a "good fit" for Coventry amidst growing speculation about who will take over from Mark Robins.

Lampard has history with Leeds dating back to the Marcelo Bielsa era, when as then manager of Derby County his side knocked Leeds United out of the play-offs, that encounter coming after the Spygate controversy when a member of Leeds' staff was found acting suspiciously outside the Rams’ training ground before a league fixture between the clubs and Leeds were subsequently fined £200,000 by the English Football League for their actions.
