Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to be named in the squad to face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, as rumours swirl about a move to the Spanish giants as soon as next year. Contract discussions for Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are on everyone's lips - and Liverpool Echo readers in our comments section think that Alexander-Arnold should be in the conversation too.
The England international's contract expires next year, and other clubs can begin to arrange talks with him from January. Alexander-Arnold has a good friendship with fellow England man Jude Bellingham, and Real would surely find his talents useful.
Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has refused to be drawn on the subject, saying: “I'm sorry but I cannot think about Alexander-Arnold. He is not my player.” Liverpool will enjoy having Alexander-Arnold back for a Champions League clash, but he will be in the shop window for his suitors.
Reader Michaelrichmond says that the club shouldn't chance letting their key players go for nothing: "FSG get the contracts for Mo, Trent and VvD signed, sealed and delivered now."
Hakdaddy agrees: "Very very very frustrating... My patience is wearing thin with this, never should be in this position where Salah, Trent and VVD could leave in Jan on a free transfer next season."
Commenter Lovemedo has missed him while he's been injured: "Say what you want about Trent. His absence creates a vacuum in our attack from the right."
MadridRed37 says: "I wouldn't want to lose any of them, but if I had to choose, I'd keep Salah and Trent. They both have the ability to change a game out of nowhere. And I don't want Madrid to get any freebies..."
There are some who think Alexander-Arnold would be an acceptable loss to Liverpool. Jaykz writes: "If Mo and VvD want to stay. Extend their contracts. They are invaluable. He is probably the easiest to replace."
Lfcana writes: "He deserves his dreams. I have no doubt that he will finish his career at Liverpool, and as captain. I would like to get some money but don't hold his ambitions or feelings against him. He has been a better player under Slot. That might have less to do with Slot than his own maturity... no telling from a distance. Just come back to us, #66."
