“I was bold enough to suggest” – Pat Nevin backs himself over claim he made about Chelsea star

Pat Nevin believes Nicolas Jackson will score 20 Premier League goals this season and said he’s now feeling more “bullish” about his claim.

The Blues have made a very good start to the season under Enzo Maresca and currently sit third in the league, just a point behind Manchester City in second.

A number of players have showed huge improvement already under the Italian with Jackson falling into that category.

It’s no secret that Chelsea wanted to sign a striker over the summer having pursued Victor Osimhen for the majority of the window, whilst a deal for Samu Omorodion collapsed at the last minute despite everything being agreed.

However, Jackson’s seven goals and three assists in 12 games this campaign have shown not signing a number nine might not have been the worst thing.

The 23-year-old has been one of Chelsea’s stand out performers this season and The Athletic reported last week the Blues believe Jackson is a top three striker in the Premier League.

The Senegal international has rightly been receiving plaudits this season and Jamie O’Hara believes he’s turning into a really good striker.

It’s likely Chelsea will still look to bring another striker in and they have recently been linked with Ipswich’s Liam Delap.

Former Blue Nevin tipped Jackson to score 20 goals this season and has revealed he’s now feeling even more “bullish” about his claim.

“I was bold enough to suggest a few months back on this page that this season he would be a 20-goal striker,” he wrote in his BBC Sport newsletter.

“After watching his vastly improved movement and touch against Leicester I am feeling even more bullish.”

Jackson is already half way to his total of 14 league goals from last season after just 12 games and providing he stays fit he needs a one in two strike rate for the remainder of the campaign to hit 20 league goals.

With the amount of chances Chelsea create and with how much Jackson’s finishing has improved you wouldn’t bet against him hitting that milestone.
