Celtic have been linked with a move - and here’s why they should.

Celtic are one of the clubs who have been linked with a move for Evan Ferguson - and there’s reasons why they should.

The striker rated at £60m+ has been made available for loan by Brighton as they look to get him regular minutes. Alongside Rangers, Premier League clubs and teams abroad, there are no shortage of possible suitors for Ferguson, with Glasgow a possible destination according to reports.

With Kyogo and Adam Idah already at the club, it might not seem like a Celtic striker deal needed urgently. But if one is there to be done, here is why they should look to make it happen.

Champions League factor

Celtic have a manageable route that looks set to get them into the knockout play-off round of the Champions League. The level of competition is about to go up and Ferguson has already proven his way to goal at a high level, scoring 17 times for the Seagulls. More firepower will be needed to blast their way through those type of rounds, and Brighton would no doubt be keen to see him play on this stage.

Irish connections

Settling in wouldn’t be an issue. Republic of Ireland teammates Liam Scales and Idah would be able to clue him in quiet quickly on the demands of Rodgers, so settling in probably wouldn’t be too much of an issue, and he’d be able to hit the ground running. Before the striker made the switch from Bohemians to Brighton in January 2021, he had a trial at Parkhead. Could now be the time to make it happen?

It’s a different game to when some of these guys played but when the likes of Ian Wright and Chris Sutton come with big name rave reviews, you know the star in question must have ability.

Wright said in 2023: “He is fearless at 18. Can you imagine being in the Premier League at 18? You’re not under the pressure you would be under like Garnacho would be under at Manchester United – you watch the way he plays, all the top teams, the top six teams. He can play in any of those teams. We know Brighton, at some stage, they will sell him.”

And Sutton has compared him to ex-Blackburn teammate Alan Shearer. Also speaking in 2023, Sutton said: “He reminds me of a young Alan Shearer. That’s what I see when I look at Evan Ferguson. I had the best seat in the house to watch Alan score a bundle of goals for Blackburn. The natural feel to his finishing, his physicality, his positioning.

“Ferguson is only 18 but already he is displaying the attributes which made Alan a total menace for Premier League defenders.”
