Phil McNulty says there have been times this season when he’s felt “sympathy” for Everton talisman Dominic Calvert-Lewin after the form he’s shown.
The Toffees have scored just 10 Premier League goals this season, with only newly-promoted Southampton having fewer with nine to their name.
Replying to a fan’s question via the BBC Sport website (26 November) about what his opinion was regarding the Englishman’s form this season, chief football writer McNulty shared why he has some sympathy for the striker.
“I think Calvert-Lewin’s attitude has always been good. I think he is a striker, usually on his own, playing in a team that creates few chances and does not score many goals,” he wrote.
“Having watched Everton this season, there have been times when I have felt sympathy for him because of a lack of service, while he is often being heavily outnumbered.

“I do think there is some merit in the argument that he is not a clinical finisher.”
Sean Dyche needs to get Dominic Calvert-Lewin firing for Everton again
This season has been rather poor for the Toffees and most, if not all, of their fans would agree with that statement.
There have been times throughout the campaign where Dyche’s men have surprised and come away from games with a win, but as they currently sit 16th in the Premier League table, things evidently need to improve ASAP.
The form of Calvert-Lewin has been one of the main questions that have gone around the Everton camp this season because it seems as if he’s lost all composure in the final third.

The 27-year-old is supposed to be the Merseyside outfit’s best striker and the man to lead their attacking line, but that burden has fallen onto the shoulders of Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye more than once this term.
Only time will tell what the future holds for Dyche and Calvert-Lewin, but unless the former Burnley boss can get his striker firing again, he could lose his job.
In other Everton news, a replacement for Sean Dyche has been mooted at Goodison Park.
