The rumours about potential Chelsea interest in strikers is back, with CaughtOffside today carrying an exclusive which claims that the Blues have their sights on Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
Newcastle’s heavy £115m asking price is currently stymieing a deal, but this exclusive claims that Chelsea are trying to push that number down towards a more manageable £80m. The 25 year old would cost a lot either way, and would demand big wages. It’s not a deal which would fit with many of the others we’ve seen under this ownership. But sometimes you’ve got to bend the rules for a game changing talent.

Also mentioned as an alternative is Benjamin Sesko. His name has been floating around for more than a year now, but it seems likely to come to a head next summer when RB Leipzig look to cash in. He’s cited as an “alternative” to Isak by this story, for Arsenal as well as Chelsea.

Excellent Jackson still needs support
The debate about whether Chelsea need another striker is another question. Nicolas Jackson is having a great season and is showing he’s more than good enough to be our main man. But if a great chance to sign a top player at a good price comes up, we’d be mad not to take it, no matter who is already on the team.
We’ve been very lucky with Jackson’s fitness so far, but we can’t expect him to stay injury free forever. Plus, next year we will hopefully have a major step up in terms of European competition, and we want to have two top strikers to allow us to compete on both fronts.
Also mentioned recently have been Evan Ferguson of Brighton and Liam Delap of Ipswich – although those two big boy bruisers are a slightly different style to Isak and Sesko.
