Sheffield Wednesday could be in trouble after club who wanted Rohl in the summer sack manager - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has been in charge for 13 months now, following his appointment at S6 in October 2023.

Danny Rohl has quickly seen his stock rise during his short time at Sheffield Wednesday, with last season’s great escape establishing him as one of the most exciting, up and coming managers in the Football League.

The former Bayern Munich and Germany no.2 has garnered a reputation for playing attacking and exciting football. And it’s a style of play that proved effective in the Championship last season with the Owls beating the drop against the odds.

Going into the summer, Wednesday’s Championship rivals Hull City and Sunderland were heavily linked with Rohl, who eventually signed a new contract at Hillsborough.

More recently, Rohl has been tipped to be a ‘great fit’ for Leicester City after the Foxes sacked Steve Cooper after five months in charge.

But aside from Leicester, there’s now another team who might be a cause for concern at Wednesday.

Hull City sack Tim Walter after Sheffield Wednesday

On Tuesday night, Sheffield Wednesday won 2-0 at Hull City in a game that has proved to be Tim Walter’s last in charge of Hull City: On Wednesday, Hull City announced that they’d parted ways with the German.

Bookies’ lists will fill with the inevitable, out-of-work names. But having had an interest in Rohl in the summer, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to hear Rohl’s name mentioned alongside the Hull City job once again.

The Hull City owner is desperate for an attacking style to be implemented and he would’ve seen first-hand on Tuesday that Rohl is a manager who can do just that.

And Tigers owner Acun Ilicali has certainly shown in the last few transfer windows that he’s someone who’s ready to pump money into the playing squad, which could certainly be an attractive proposition for Rohl whose resources are limited at Wednesday.

What is Danny Rohl’s stance on his Sheffield Wednesday future?

During the summer, Rohl signed a new contract at Sheffield Wednesday, highlighting his commitment to the club.

Then speaking after the final day win at Sunderland last season, which secured Championship safety, Rohl was quizzed on his future at the club.

He told the press at the time: “I had a lot of meetings with the players but today it is not important, it is not the key point. I know you want to know more but it is important that we enjoy this evening. We have to enjoy this and be happy in the moment.”

Right now, Rohl seems to have no intentions of leaving. But being such an ambitious manager, an ambitious project like the one at Hull could be appealing.

The January transfer window will tell us a lot more about the club’s current financial situation. If Wednesday are restricted once again, it could give Rohl cause to entertain possible interest from elsewhere in the future.
