Reports continue to link Chelsea to one of the brightest rising talents in the Premier League

As the January transfer window moves closer, Chelsea have been linked with Ipswich Town’s rising star Liam Delap.

I can see why the move is tempting, but while Delap undoubtedly has talent, with a reputation for scoring goals in both the Championship and now the Premier League, a move to Chelsea could prove to be a bad deal for both the player and the club. Here’s why.

One of the key factors that makes Delap's potential move to Chelsea concerning is the sheer competition he would face for a first-team spot. Chelsea already boasts an abundance of attacking talent, with established names like Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, and Cole Palmer, plus potentially new arrivals, all vying for positions in the forward line. The addition of Delap would simply add to this congestion, making it exceedingly difficult for him to secure consistent minutes.

I know one of the reasons the links have been so strong is the fact that Joe Shields, who has an excellent track record with youth players, is one of the people who looked after Delap at Manchester City. Shields has already been successful in bringing in players like Palmer, Lavia, and Sancho to west London.

However, for a young player like Delap, consistent game time is crucial for development. He needs a team that will play him week in, week out, to take his game to the next level. While the potential is certainly there, Chelsea already has players in similar positions, and Delap simply wouldn’t get the regular playing time he needs to continue growing as a player.

Chelsea’s current form is not what it once was, and the club is going through a rebuilding phase. With numerous new signings and managerial changes in recent years, the pressure on any new arrival is immense. Delap, at this stage of his career, may not be equipped to handle such high levels of expectation.

Coming from a club like Ipswich, where the pressure is low, to a high-profile team like Chelsea could be a difficult transition. Chelsea fans have little patience for under-performance, and the pressure to deliver immediately could potentially stifle a young player’s confidence.

If Delap does arrive and struggles to make an impact or fails to live up to the hype, he could quickly fall out of favour. The weight of those expectations could damage his confidence, which for a player still in his early twenties is a significant risk. It could stunt his development and negatively impact his long-term prospects.

While I understand why a move to Chelsea might seem attractive, I’m in agreement with those who argue that Jackson has shown he’s more than capable of leading the line. If Chelsea want a backup striker, they’d be better off targeting someone with more experience, someone willing to play in cup games and use their experience to guide younger players. A player like Delap, who would likely want to fight for a starting spot, might not be the right fit at this stage of his career.
