Kevin Nolan believes Tomas Soucek’s header to open up the scoring between West Ham United and Newcastle was “fantastic.”

The Hammers got a 2-0 win in their Premier League clash against the Magpies on 25 November which saw both Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka get their names on the goalsheet at St James’ Park.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live in quotes relayed by BBC Sport (26 November), Nolan shared his thoughts on the performance of Julen Lopetegui’s men.

“West Ham got the goals just at the right time. Newcastle were on top but they got a fantastic corner from Emerson and Tomas Soucek pops up in the box with a fantastic header,” he said.

“They seemed to ride the wave of Newcastle attacks. Newcastle missed big opportunities and that’s what you need – when you’re down there, struggling a bit and you haven’t found your mojo, you need those moments of luck.

“West Ham got it, but I thought they were excellent in the second half. It was a great night for West Ham and a poor one for Newcastle.”

West Ham may have saved the job of Julen Lopetegui

Julen Lopetegui’s job has been under a magnifying glass for what seems like the vast majority of the season.

The Hammers spent big in the summer and, to be quite frank, haven’t really had all that much to show from their summer arrivals aside from the likes of Max Kilman and Crysencio Summerville.

Many areas of West Ham’s team needed upgrading and while Tim Steidten managed to cover most bases in the summer, the form of the newbies has left many questioning how strong his player recruitment is.

West Ham have had quite a topsy-turvy season and while they’ve managed to beat both the Magpies and Manchester United this term, it feels like a lot more could come from the squad.

Their unexpected win against Newcastle has no doubt bought Lopetegui some time so, in reality, he should be thanking both Soucek and Wan-Bissaka for giving him an extra game or two to prove his worth to David Sullivan.

Only time will tell what the future holds but until a decision is made, it doesn’t feel like the club are going to improve all that much.
