Phil McNulty believes the future of Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Everton is coming to a “natural” close as the striker has shown “no inclination” to extend his Goodison Park stay.

The Toffees’ number nine has been their starting choice for most of the season but has once again underperformed, with the striker scoring just two goals across all competitions thus far.

Replying to a fan’s question via the BBC Sport website (26 November) about where the future of the 27-year-old lies, BBC journalist McNulty shared his opinion on the matter.

“[Calvert-Lewin] never looks fully confident in one-on-one situations – the sort natural strikers normally lap up,” he wrote.

“Only Carlo Ancelotti seemed to be able to solve that one. So my view is that he is suffering from playing in a team that lacks creation, but is now very short on confidence and surrounded by noise about his future.

“He has certainly shown no inclination to sign a new deal at Everton, so maybe his time at the club is simply coming to a natural close.”

Everton must sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin in January

Although there have already been reports of both parties entering negotiations regarding the striker extending his Goodison Park stay, it feels like the Toffees should just sell up in January and get as much money as possible for him.

He’s once again been well below the standard expected of a Premier League striker and has left an awful lot to be desired when he’s been played.

Many fans will likely think it’s silly for the Merseyside outfit to let him go but with the likes of Youssef Chermiti and Armando Broja coming back into the first-team fold imminently, it could be the best option they have.

Due to his contract expiring at the end of the season, he’ll likely be sold on for pennies, but any amount of money for the striker is better than him choosing to leave on a free at the end of the term.

There’s still plenty of time for things to change of course but with foreign clubs such as Juventus sniffing around the Englishman [Tutto Juve, 15 October], Sean Dyche is going to have to decide about his future quickly.

In other Everton news, a replacement for Sean Dyche has been mooted at Goodison Park.
