Wigan Athletic: Portsmouth's Callum Lang uses one word to describe Jason Kerr

Former Wigan Athletic star Callum Lang, now of Championship Portsmouth, was among those to congratulate the Latics captain following their 2-1 victory over Northampton Town on Tuesday night.

Shaun Maloney's men took the lead on just 11 minutes, when striker Dale Taylor threaded the ball through to Thelo Aasgaard, whose effort beat Lee Burge despite the fact the Cobblers keeper managed to get a hand to it.

Taylor was once again directly involved in the action when the Latics doubled their lead, as he picked up a loose ball, and passed it out wide to Jonny Smith.

The former Burton Albion man cut inside onto his favoured left foot, and curled a shot into the top corner, which Burge could have done nothing about.

The Latics fully deserved their 2-0 half-time lead at the Brick Community Stadium, but just over 10 minutes into the second half, substitute Tom Eaves scored to put the Cobblers back into contention.

But Maloney's side were able to hang on, and were rewarded for claiming their first home victory since early October, as they climbed to 15th in the League One table.

Following his side's victory on Tuesday night, the Latics captain posted on Instagram: "Another 3 points."

Several of Kerr's past and present Latics teammates commented on the defender's post, as former Wigan striker Charlie Wyke joked: "Nice Jase, knew you'd come good."

Meanwhile, Portsmouth's Lang, a Tics academy product, commented "Tank", to which his ex-teammate responded "boshh."

Winger Jordan Jones, who plied his trade for the Latics before joining League Two Carlisle United last summer, when his contract at the Brick Community Stadium expired, was also clearly delighted with the efforts of his former club and wrote: "Lov this."

While Josh, Stones, who is currently on loan at Oldham from the League One club, and Latics winger Dion Rankine both congratulated Kerr, and wrote: "That's my boy" and "Skipppp" respectively.

Goalscorer Smith, and right-back Toby Sibbick also shared their appreciation for their captain, as Smith commented: "Nice Jason", while Sibbick wrote: "Skippa."

Kerr is thoroughly deserving of such plaudits following the Latics' triumph over the Cobblers, as he completed 48 passes, more than any other player involved in the fixture, and also made 10 clearances, as per FotMob.

It is no wonder that several Latics stars, and former players, were so pleased by the club's victory over the Cobblers on Tuesday night, as the triumph marked the first time the Greater Manchester club have managed consecutive wins this season.

Maloney and co have aspirations of enduring a comfortable campaign, after they landed a top-half spot last term, despite beginning the 2023/24 campaign with an eight-point deduction, and being wholly reliant upon free agent signings, youth academy products and loanees amid a transfer embargo.

The Latics have been free from such shackles this season, and therefore hope to reside in the top-half one again this term, but some poor results, such as a 2-0 defeat at lowly Cambridge last month left Maloney and co looking nervously over their shoulders.

But now that the Tics have managed back-to-back victories, following a result which was also their first home win since 1st October, the Brick Community Stadium faithful will hope that their club has turned an important corner.

Meanwhile, revenge over Cambridge in the FA Cup on Saturday could see the Latics handed a third round glamour tie, as seen last season when Maloney's men took on eventual champions Manchester United.
