Spurs ‘desperate’ to beat Man United and Newcastle to England star

Tottenham Hotspur are desperate to beat several of their Premier League rivals to one of Ange Postecoglou’s top midfield targets and are thus plotting to get ahead of the queue by completing a deal in January.

Spurs have some midfield issues

Summer signings Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray have not started a single Premier League game so far this season, which indicates that Postecoglou does not think they are ready to perform consistently at the highest level.

With Rodrigo Bentancur now serving a long-term suspension, the Tottenham head coach is now short of numbers in the middle of the park.

Unsurprisingly, the Australian is said to be eager to bulk up his options in the midfield in January, and he has identified one English star as an ‘ideal’ fit for his side.

Tottenham desperate to beat PL rivals to midfielder

This report comes from GiveMeSport, who say that Angel Gomes is the player that Spurs are eyeing, with the Lilywhites desperate to beat their Premier League rivals to the player.

It is pointed out that Spurs are aware that Manchester United and Newcastle United are also both keen on landing the 24-year-old, but they are now considering getting ahead of both clubs by making a bid in January.

Gomes’ current deal at Lille runs out next summer but rather than wait to sign him as a free agent, the North London club are thought to be considering offering the Ligue 1 club a small fee in January and thus jumping to the front of the queue to land the player.

Man Utd are not expected to bid in January

GiveMeSport say that new United boss Rubem Amorim has given the green light to sign Gomes, but the Red Devils are only thought to be exploring a free transfer at the end of the season.

It is explained that this offers a chance for Tottenham to swoop for the midfielder in January as long as Lille are willing to let their star man go.

The publication adds that Gomes is ready to make a move to the Premier League, but Spurs would have to make him one of their highest earners as the Lille star is expected to demand more than £150,000 per week at his next club
