Liverpool ended an eight-match winless streak against Real Madrid with a superb display to secure a 2-0 win at Anfield and stay top of the UEFA Champions League league phase table.
Second-half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo mean that Liverpool have won all five of their UCL games this season, but they had Caoimhín Kelleher to thank for his penalty save from Kylian Mbappé nine minutes after the opener.
Mac Allister’s goal came after 52 minutes, but if anything it was a shock that it took so long to arrive. A string of fine saves from Thibaut Courtois – often Liverpool’s nemesis in this competition – kept Liverpool out for a time, but the Argentine’s sweet strike low into the corner of the net from just inside the box ended his hopes of another clean sheet.
It was Mac Allister’s second Champions League goal, after his first came against Bologna earlier this season, which also opened the scoring at Anfield.
An injury-hit Real side struggled all night and didn’t attempt a single shot on target in the match until the 61st minute, when Kelleher saved superbly from Mbappé’s penalty.
Andy Robertson had fouled Lucas Vázquez to give away a penalty for the second time in four days, but the Irish goalkeeper stopped Mbappé from scoring his 50th Champions League goal. Excluding shootouts, Kelleher has saved three of his four penalties as a Liverpool player in all competition.
Liverpool missed a penalty of their own in the 70th minute, as Mohamed Salah sent his penalty wide, clipping the outside of the post. However, their nerves were settled six minutes later when Gakpo was left unmarked and headed past Courtois following a corner.
Gakpo’s latest goal means that all six of his goals for Liverpool in major European competition have come at Anfield, all coming in his last six home games.
Following this latest victory, Arne Slot has led Liverpool to 17 wins in his first 19 games in charge. Many thought following Jürgen Klopp would be an extremely difficult task, but he’s already managed something the German never did in six attempts at the club – beat Real Madrid.
