Liverpool showed their Champions League-winning credentials with a 2-0 win over Real Madrid on an enthralling night of action at Anfield.

Carlo Ancelotti's injury-hit side were swept up by the fervent home support, who drove their side onto a victory that maintained their perfect start in the competition and left the defending champions sweating over their qualification chances.

The Reds dominated the first half but were made to wait until the 52nd minute for Alexis Mac Allister's opener, which came after slick interplay with Conor Bradley.

Madrid squandered a golden chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty but Kylian Mbappe, whose struggles in the Madrid white continued, was unable to beat Caoimhin Kelleher.

Perhaps the most shocking incident of the night came just a few minutes later when Mohamed Salah fluffed his lines from 12 yards. An intervention from Thibaut Courtois was not required.

The home side made the result safe in 76th minute when Cody Gakpo, on as a substitute, rose highest from a corner to nod home from close range. More to follow.
