Aston Villa have every right to be aggrieved by the controversial decision to rule out Morgan Rogers’ late goal in the 0-0 draw against Juventus, according to Keith Hackett.
Rogers thought he had snatched another famous Champions League win for Villa in Wednesday’s (27 November) contest at Villa Park when finding the net in added time.
However, the goal was disallowed after the video assistant referee spotted a foul on goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.
Sharing his instant reaction exclusively to Villa News, former PGMOL chief Hackett said: “Aston Villa have every right to be aggrieved by the decision by the referee to rule out a perfectly good goal.
“The Juventus goalkeeper and an Aston Villa player challenged for the ball. There was no foul and frankly the contact between both players was minimal.
“The goalkeeper missed the ball, misjudging his attempt to gain possession. This is another example that with the involvement of the ability to view the incident again through VAR a good goal was wrongly ruled out.

“You would expect referees to get these game-changing incidents right. Villa fans have been let down by the officials.“
Aston Villa robbed versus Juventus
Stan Collymore spoke on behalf of every Aston Villa fan as he labelled the decision to chalk off Rogers’ goal a “disgrace”.
There was next to no contact from Diego Carlos on Di Gregorio, who was surely not expecting the officials to rule out the goal.

Even in Europe, where officials are often guilty of bizarre calls, this is right up there. In the grand scheme of things, quite how much it matters remains to be seen.
A point against Serie A heavyweights Juve is still a decent outcome, but it could have been so much better had a different set of officials been in charge.
