Arsenal and Liverpool join Manchester City in race to sign Premier League breakout star: Reports

close

Arsenal and Liverpool have allegedly entered the transfer race to snap up Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton, who has lately been linked with a move to Manchester City.

Wharton, who was called up to England's UEFA Euro 2024 squad, has impressed with his great displays for his club since the turn of the year. The 20-year-old midfielder has registered four assists in 26 total games for Oliver Glasner's side.

Now, according to Caught Offside, Arsenal have held talks with Palace over a potential move for Wharton in the future. However, they could face difficult competition from Premier League title challenging duo Liverpool and Manchester City.

Arsenal, who are fourth in the league table with 22 points from 12 games, are willing to launch a move to sign Wharton in January. They are prepared to table a £46 million bid for the star, while the Eagles are likely to hold out for £54 million.

Should Wharton secure a permanent move to Mikel Arteta's side, he could prove to be a fine signing for them. The Blackburn Rovers youth product would likely displace Jorginho further down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium side.

Arsenal icon opines on Liverpool star's future

Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, Gunners legend Ian Wright shared his two cents on Mohamed Salah's future at Liverpool with the Egyptian's contract set to expire next June. The 61-year-old said (h/t TBR):

"He wants three years, they want to give him two, and you can understand why. There's a long history of players in the Premier League signing big contracts over 30 and you give them big money and suddenly they drop off. You know that with [Pierre-Emerick] Aubemeyang at Arsenal."

Wright, who represented the Gunners between 1991 and 1998, added:

"But the thing is, we're talking about Mo Salah. Salah doesn't miss games, he's not that kind of player. Look at him, the way he keeps himself, the way he is as a man, he's not someone who will sign a new contract and clock off. If there's anyone over 30 who I'm going to give a three-year deal to, it's going to be him."

Last Sunday, Salah revealed that he has yet to receive a contract offer from his club. The ex-Chelsea forward asserted that he is disappointed about the Merseyside club's current stance as he is arguably in the form of his life now.

So far this season, the 32-year-old has found the back of the net 12 times in 19 overall outings for Liverpool. He has also laid out 10 assists for his club so far.
