Dean Ashton has claimed that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is “techincally not good enough” – but his comments on the Everton striker are way off the mark.

Everton have been dismal this season. As has Calvert-Lewin among several other players but that is solely down to the negative tactics adopted by Sean Dyche.

Ashton’s comments, as quoted by Ian Croll, are just inaccurate and if Everton can find a manager with a fresh identity, Calvert-Lewin will be able to thrive again and prove him wrong.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin can be crucial to Everton

One season shouldn’t define a player’s ability, especially when it’s played under Dyche. Calvert-Lewin for years has showcased his ability as a top-level Premier League striker but he can only match the levels set by his teammates.

The Toffees have had creativity issues all season, meaning he has been starved of service. The lack of creativity means there’s a heavy emphasis on Calvert-Lewin to carve chances out for himself and he simply isn’t that kind of striker.

He scores goals and his record of doing that, at what has been a largely poor squad throughout this time at the club, is impressive.

The Englishman has notched 70 goals in 259 appearances on Merseyside, including a 21-goal season back in 2021.

He categorically isn’t the issue at Everton and until they are resolved, any comments on his ability from the likes of Sky Sports pundit Ashton seem unjust.

There is a reason why top European clubs are courting his services, including AC Milan among several English clubs (TEAMtalk). That reason is that he is a proven goalscorer, it’s now up to Everton to provide him with the players capable of unlocking that ability.

In other Everton news, Sean Dyche could be replaced once a takeover from TFG is ratified.
