Leeds United handed Frank Lampard return date as Coventry City make move

Leeds United's Championship rivals Coventry City have confirmed the appointment of Frank Lampard as their new manager. The former England international returns to the dugout after spells at Derby County, Chelsea and Everton.

Coventry have been searching for a new manager since parting company with Mark Robins earlier this month, with the Sky Blues off the promotion pace. However, Lampard will be looking to emulate his achievements with Derby, who he guided to the Championship play-off final in 2019, before losing 2-1 to Aston Villa, having beaten Leeds in a two-legged semi-final.

Coventry City owner and executive chairman Doug King said: "I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as head coach. Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this League to be successful.

“His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a club are striving to reach."

Leeds are scheduled to head to Coventry on February 8 after beating the Sky Blues 3-0 at Elland Road in September, thanks to goals from Willy Gnonto, Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe.

Lampard, of course, was the Derby manager during the infamous 'spygate' episode, with former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa admitting sending someone to 'spy' on their training, something for which Leeds were fined £200,000 in 2019.
