'My only concern': Paul Merson makes claim about Matheus Cunha some Wolves fans will question

Wolves fans are feeling more optimistic after a four-game unbeaten run, which has been heavily inspired by Matheus Cunha.

Wolves beat Fulham 4-1 last weekend, showing good character to come from behind.

Matheus Cunha scored two goals and laid on one assist for Joao Gomes in the game, and the Brazilian has come in for all kinds of compliments since the game.

Alan Shearer said Cunha has been one of the Premier League’s best players so far this season.

And Ashley Williams said Cunha took his first goal at Fulham in a Dennis Bergkamp-like fashion.

It’s crystal clear at this point that Cunha will play a massive part for Wolves this season in terms of pulling away from the danger zone – but pundit Paul Merson does have one ‘concern’ about the Molineux number 10.

Paul Merson suggests Matheus Cunha isn’t consistent

Cunha is in the form of his life right now, and fans who don’t watch Wolves week in, week out are now catching wind of his performances.

Cunha’s goal catalogue has been doing the rounds on social media, and plenty are lauding the star’s ability in front of goal.

A statistic has shown that Cunha is eighth for Premier League goal contributions made since the start of 2023/24, suggesting him as one of the very best players in the top-flight.

But for Paul Merson, Cunha actually lacks consistency.

He told Sportskeeda: “Matheus Cunha is their match-winner without a doubt. As long as he stays with them, Wolves will be safe in the race to avoid the drop from the Premier League.

“The only concern I have about Cunha is that he can sometimes not turn up in certain games. If he is in the mood, he is such a fine player. But he has to do that on a more consistent basis.”

This is a very intriguing take from Merson about Cunha, who has undoubtedly been Wolves’ standout player this season so far.

Granted, the Brazilian’s form dipped at the end of last season when Wolves won just one of their last nine Premier League games.

That said, he still scored three goals during that run, included that very special solo goal against Nottingham Forest.

Appearances – 49

Goals – 21

Assists – 11

There have, of course, been moments where Cunha hasn’t impacted games. But by and large, he’s been very consistent for Wolves since the start of last season, as evidenced by where he sits in the goal contributions table.

Certainly, Gary O’Neil will not have any issue with the level of consistency Cunha has been showing in recent times.
