‘Exactly what is needed’ – Doug King shares immediate reaction to Coventry City’s Frank Lampard …

Coventry City owner Doug King says Frank Lampard knows ‘exactly what is needed’ to reach the top of the game after taking over as new Sky Blues boss.

Coventry City have named their permanent replacement for Mark Robins, hiring former Chelsea and Everton boss Frank Lampard.

He takes the reins after three games under the temporary lead of Rhys Carr. The interim boss oversaw draws against Sunderland and Sheffield United before a midweek defeat to another promotion contender in Burnley.

Lampard had been heavily linked with the vacancy and quickly emerged as the lead contender. He now returns to the Championship for the first time since leaving Derby County in 2019, who he had led to the play-off final.

Now, upon the announcement of Lampard’s arrival, Coventry City owner and executive chairman Doug King has shared his first words on the appointment.

As quoted by the club’s official website, King voiced his excitement at having Lampard at the helm and said he knows it all when it comes to succeeding at the top of the game. He said:

“I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as head coach. Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this League to be successful.

“His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a Club are striving to reach.”

A tough job ahead

This is a great chance for Lampard to prove the doubters of his managerial abilities wrong. Coventry City are a very well supported club and the new head coach will be backed by King as they look to fulfil their ambitious aims of rising to the Premier League.

However, succeeding Mark Robins will not be easy. He’s a club legend and was sacked against the wishes of the vast majority of supporters, so if Lampard struggles, it might not be long before the mood turns sour.

Much of that vitriol would likely be directed at King though, rather than the new boss. Lampard will be backed by supporters, that much is for sure.

He’ll be out to prove the doubters wrong and lift Coventry City back up the Championship table.

The first five fixtures

Lampard takes over at a crucial stage in the Championship season.

Coventry City and their second-tier rivals are entering the hectic winter schedule. The outcome of this run could decide whether the Sky Blues can make a push for the upper reaches of the table or if they’re to battle it out in obscurity for the rest of the campaign.

He’ll lead the team out for the first time against Cardiff City this weekend. That is certainly a winnable game on home turf.

The next four games see Lampard’s side pit up against Millwall, West Brom, Hull City and Portsmouth.
