Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo appears to have emulated Manchester City's Erling Haaland after aiming a dig at Jude Bellingham on social media.
On Wednesday night, the Reds returned to action in the Champions League, producing an impressive performance to beat Real Madrid at Anfield 2-0. Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring on 52 minutes before Gakpo wrapped things up on 76 minutes with a header that beat Thibaut Courtois.
The win means Liverpool remains perfect in Europe this term, with Arne Slot's side having won all five games so far in the new Champions League format. And after the game, Gakpo appears to have emulated Haaland, who told Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to "stay humble" earlier this season following Man City's 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
Taking to social media, Gakpo posted a series of photos from the match, with the first being one of him next to Bellingham. He captioned the post: "James 4:6. God opposes the proud, but shows favor to the humble."
While it could, and most likely is nothing, it seems quite pointed that the first photo the Dutch midfielder used is one of him and Bellingham, who was part of the England side that dumped Gakpo and the Netherlands out of the European Championships earlier this summer.
Speaking after the game, Gakpo said: "I think today we were good in possession, trying to dominate in possession as well. We created some good chances out of our possession play so I think that made the difference for us today. Also defensive, we were very strong to deny them fast transition moments. So I think overall it was a good performance and that made the difference for us today.
He added: "It's always important to score the second goal to get more of an advantage in the game so I think that was an important one."
Liverpool.com says: "Whether or not Gakpo really meant to 'take a shot' at Jude Bellingham we'll never know. It certainly seems like it was but it could just be nothing. Ultimately, social media sniping aside, both Gakpo and Bellingham will know the better team on the night prevailed at Anfield, with - penalty miss from Kylian Mbappe aside - Real Madrid failing to really land a glove on Liverpool at Anfield."
