Paul Merson predicts Crystal Palace vs Newcastle, makes "serious threat" claim

Saturday sees Newcastle visit Selhurst Park, the scene of last season’s 2-0 win. However, things have changed drastically for Crystal Palace.

Oliver Glasner will be hoping for just a second Premier League win of the season on Saturday when Newcastle visit.

After the record-breaking end to Crystal Palace’s 2023/24 campaign, there was a quiet confidence that the Eagles would push for European football this season.

However, 12 games into the season and it seems clear this was an oversight from the club – as Crystal Palace sit 19th in the league.

However, a win this weekend could see the Eagles fly up to potentially 15th at the highest.

Paul Merson predicts the result vs Newcastle

Crystal Palace will be hopeful of continuing the recent trend which has seen just one loss in five games, although three points are the ultimate goal.

With the game on Saturday drawing close, now Paul Merson has been predicting the result in his weekly predictions column for SportsKeeda.

MORE PALACE STORIES

“They [Newcastle] now face Crystal Palace, who I thought were really good away from home against Aston Villa last time out. They looked like a serious threat on the counter and used pace to their advantage. You could say Palace rode their luck at times in that game, but so did Villa.”

Continuing, Merson explained that Palace will have to do better going forward.

“Palace are 19th at the moment and will now face an uphill battle to avoid relegation. Southampton are the only team with fewer goals than them this season, so that’s an area where they must improve if they want to survive in this division.

“I can definitely see Newcastle scoring in this game, but I have a feeling Palace can match them.”

Concluding, Merson predicted that the two sides will share the spoils, with a 2-2 scoreline predicted, mimicking last weeks 2-2 draw between Palace and Villa.

Crystal Palace to get big injury boost

While Newcastle represent another tough task in this tricky run, it seems likely that Glasner will be boosted by the returning Eberechi Eze.

During the pre-Aston Villa press conference last week, Glasner shared an update on Eze’s return from injury.

The Palace head coach ruled Eze out against the Villians, but left the door open for Eze to appear against Newcastle as he has now been back in training for almost two weeks.

So with the return of Eze now possibly set to come against Newcastle, it is timely for the Eagles and may be the difference needed to kick-start the season.
