Team News | Lopetegui gives squad update ahead of Arsenal derby

West Ham United Head Coach Julen Lopetegui says he has a couple of players who will need to have their fitness assessed ahead of Saturday's Premier League derby with Arsenal.

The Hammers have a quick turnaround for their home return following Monday's hard-fought 2-0 victory at Newcastle United, meaning recovery time between the fixtures has been scant.

But Lopetegui and his medical staff will give themselves until the last moment before making decisions over the concerned players' availability.

Elsewhere, midfielder Edson Álvarez returns from suspension having served a two-match ban for his red card at Nottingham Forest, while Mohammed Kudus will serve the final match of his five-game suspension on Saturday.

"The team news is that we have two or three little problems that we have to assess tomorrow," Lopetegui said in Thursday's pre-match press conference.

"We have to wait until Friday morning to assess and to know exactly if they are going to be able to make it or not for the next big challenge that we have.

"I am positive. I would like that all of them can be ready, but let's see."

Lopetegui himself will have to watch on from the stands at London Stadium, as he will serve a one-match touchline ban after receiving his third yellow card of the season at St James' Park.

He was keen to stress that the most important thing on Saturday, though, will be the players on the pitch.

"The players that are on the pitch is always most important," he added. "Players ready to help the team and to be able to compete against one of the, in my opinion, best teams in the Premier League.

"So we have to be ready. I am not going to be in the dugout, and maybe I have to improve my way because I have three yellow cards, but it's done.

"I am passionate. And sometimes you try to say something, or how you act, or you make an action with your hands.

"Sometimes you do suffer [a yellow card]. But always, I try to have respect for the referee."
