Adam Wharton could make Arsenal transfer in January

According to reports, Crystal Palace and England midfielder Adam Wharton could make a sensational permanent transfer to Arsenal in the upcoming January transfer window.

Wharton only joined Crystal Palace in February 2024 and, less than a year later, he could already be set for a blockbuster move away from the Eagles as Arsenal eye a mega-money deal for the 20-year-old.

Despite his tender age, Wharton has already broken into the England national set-up and has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting midfield prospects in the Premier League, despite a recent injury struggle.

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have held talks over a potential January transfer for Wharton, and could look to close a deal for a fee in the region of £46m (€55m), although the Eagles are thought to want a fee of closer to £54m (€65m) if a deal is to be concluded.

Despite signing a midfielder in the form of Mikel Merino just last summer, for a £31.6m (€38m) fee from La Liga outfit Real Sociedad, veteran midfielders Thomas Partey and Jorginho both have contracts expiring next summer, which could see the Gunners forced to recruit in the middle of the park once again.

Whether Wharton will be the answer to Arsenal’s midfield question remains to be seen, especially with Palace unlikely to want to lose their man mid-season, but the Gunners’ fans definitely appear to be on board with, and excited by, the proposition.

One such supporter said: “[Adam Wharton] would be an outstanding signing. Best teenager in the Championship (2022/23) last year and is now a starter in the Prem and England international. [It] is a throwback Alex Ferguson-type signing (best young British player not at a traditional top-six club).”

Arsenal have also seen renewed links to another Real Sociedad, Martin Zubamendi – who famously rejected a move to Liverpool last summer – although those links are speculative at most for the time being.
