Coventry City fans will have mixed feelings on Frank Lampard’s arrival as the former Everton boss returns to management.

Many Sky Blues fans were raging at the sacking of long-time boss Mark Robins, who took the club from League Two back to the Championship, with Lampard now back in a job for the first time since an interim role back at Chelsea.

Lampard notoriously publicly slammed his players during the 2021-22 season, following a 4-0 FA Cup defeat by Crystal Palace [TNT Sports, 22 March 2022], a track record from which Coventry fans will at present be particularly sensitive.

Following their side’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield United which was watched by Lampard, Blades boss Chris Wilder accused Coventry’s players [Sheffield United FC on X, 23 November] of downing tools under Robins and raising their game following his exit.

Frank Lampard must learn from Everton mistakes at Coventry

In light of Robins’ controversial departure, Wilder’s recent comments and Lampard’s previous public criticism, Coventry fans will be filled with uncertainty.

In fairness to Lampard, his Championship track record is far from bad – he took Derby County to the play-off final in 2019 where they were beaten by Aston Villa at Wembley.

During his year-long stint at Goodison Park, however, he lost twice as many games as he won and was dismissed with just a 27.3% victory rate.

Lampard’s sacking came not long after Farhad Moshiri had issued a public reassurance his job was safe, which in turn will have his replacement, Sean Dyche, mindful of the fact his own security could turn at any moment – also with the manager-ruthless Friedkin Group imminently taking over.

Coventry supporters have been through the mill in the past couple of weeks and could revolt if they hear of any unjust, unrewarding public outcry from Lampard, who they hope will have learnt from finding out very quickly these disputes are always far better solved within the confines of the dressing room.

Then again – some of Lampard’s greatest successes in his illustrious playing career came under Jose Mourinho, a man never frightened of speaking out controversially against his own from time to time – also to varying effect.
