Dan Bardell has slammed referee Jesús Gil Manzano for his performance even before disallowing Morgan Rogers’ goal for Aston Villa against Juventus.

The Villans looked like they had taken the lead with the last kick of the game as Michele Di Gregorio dropped the ball and allowed the England international to tap into an empty net.

The goal being ruled out was the cherry on the icing on the cake for home fans inside Villa Park after the Spanish official handed out soft yellow cards to three Villa players early on.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell was unsurprised to see the late strike ruled out after the earlier showing from the referee.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “At first I thought that the referee had just given it because he pointed back to the centre circle.

“I didn’t celebrate because you’re just in a state of confusion nowadays in football; you don’t get to celebrate properly.

“It just looked like the goalkeeper mishandled the ball but nine times out of 10 they’ll get given as a foul, especially in Europe. The referee was over the top all night so it made sense that it was given as a foul.

“*I don’t think it was but it was always going to get given. I thought the referee was very dramatic all night and some of the stuff he did was needless.*“

There were plenty of ironic cheers from the terraces in B6, as a yellow card for Pierre Kalulu met with celebrations that could have been mistaken for a goal.

This summed up the performance of the man in the middle as Villa supporters clearly felt hard done by, especially when Leon Bailey picked up a yellow card for apparent dissent.

It was a positive performance from the Villans but has been shrouded by a poor showing from the match official that has caused plenty of controversy.
