Former Manchester United academy prospect Robbie Savage has urged Ineos to fund a squad overhaul in January and the summer to help Ruben Amorim implement his style at Old Trafford.

Earlier this month, Amorim arrived at United as the successor to Erik ten Hag who was sacked following a historically poor start to the Premier League season. One of the biggest changes the Portuguese head coach has tried to bring to the Reds has been the formation.

In his first game at Ipswich Town, United lined up in a 3-4-3 formation which proved so devastating for Amorim at Sporting. The Reds will follow the same tactics on Thursday night despite making six changes to the starting XI for the visit of Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.

However, Savage feels persisting with this formation is futile unless Amorim is allowed to make signings this winter. Speaking prior to kick off on TNT Sports, the ex-Premier League midfielder said: "Well I don't think a 3-4-3 can be effective for Manchester United at the minute because they have not got the players for that system.

"I think what he needs in January and the summer is a huge recruitment to get players for that system. In Portugal with Sporting in a 3-4-3 he will dominate games because they are one of the better teams against lesser sides.

"We have seen at the weekend against Ipswich, Ipswich had more of the ball, they played the box but he has not got the players for the system. Until he finds the recruitment... It is all about players.

"We can talk about systems but until he gets the players he knows for that system, I think he will struggle with this formation."
