MATCH PREVIEW: West Ham (A)

Arsenal look to continue their current winning streak with a trip to London Stadium

West Ham Performance

West Ham have been pretty mediocre this season and even stretching back a few seasons now. They have had a few good performances and won some matches, they have played poorly and been blown out.

They are still the embodiment of midtable for me and there really hasn’t been too much lately that changes my opinion on them at all.

Performance in the Premier League this season

The rank on the lower end of midtable and bordering the relegation battle in the metrics so far this season, ranking 14th in my current season ranking, 16th in xG difference and 14th in goal difference. The attack and the defense both look below average but neither as especially bad.

So far this season they have played a schedule that has not given them any favors for adapting to Julen Lopetegui. They have played the fifth hardest schedule but even the matches against teams of similar quality they have not looked all that much better to give you confidence.

West Ham Form

The hammers have 2 wins in their last 5 but have not looked like they should come away with 7 points. They have scored 5 goals from 5.1 expected and allowed 8 from 9.1 expected and had 4.5 expected points in that span.

They won the xG battle in just 1 of the 5 matches over this span, even that took them getting a very fortunate penalty against Manchester United.

Their last win against Newcastle they still looked so wide open and it took some bad finishing to take the three points.

Style Comparison

These measures look to measure a team’s “style” or play and compare to the rest of the Premier League

If you were to imagine how West Ham played it is probably exactly how it has shown up this year.

They have not been a possession team, the haven’t dominated territory, show up as a low pressing team, that plays likes to go long but not in a particularly direct fashion.

They don’t really have too many attacking numbers that stand out here. They rank in the middle for most stats but pop with turning their few touches close to goal into shots.

Defensively they are again not a standout. They give up lots of shots and are not offering lots of resistance for teams to get into their box.

Simulated Odds

West Ham vs Arsenal - Simulated Match Odds:

West Ham: 14.0%

Draw: 19.9%

Arsenal: 66.1%

My model and the betting odds like Arsenal in this match and I am pretty confident that even away from home Arsenal should come away with a win if they can execute to the level that we expect from this team. Last season this was a match where they got revenge for the home loss and came in the purple patch for the team.

I would take another win like last year and a continuation of the teams best form.
