Peter Crouch tells Enzo Maresca he has to drop Chelsea star after Conference League win

Peter Crouch gave his view on Chelsea's goalkeepers

Peter Crouch believes Enzo Maresca must drop goalkeeper Robert Sanchez following an impressive performance from Filip Jorgensen in the Europa Conference League.

The Denmark under-21 international kept a clean sheet as the Blues came away 2-0 victors over Heidenheim on Thursday evening. Goals from Christopher Nkunku and Mykhailo Mudryk earned the west London side three points but Jorgensen's interventions proved crucial as he made 11 saves.

The 22-year-old has been confined to appearances in Europe and the Carabao Cup this term, with Robert Sanchez designated as the club's No.1 option in the Premier League. As a result, not appearing in the division this weekend seems likely for Jorgensen despite scrutiny over Sanchez's position from outside of the club.

Crouch believes it is time for Jorgensen to be handed an opportunity. The former Liverpool and Tottenham forward believes Chelsea's goalkeeper warrants a start amid Sanchez's nervy outings.

Enzo Maresca gets fresh Chelsea headache as Filip Jorgensen adds pressure on Robert Sanchez

"Chelsea didn’t have their own way tonight, they had to rely on Jorgensen quite a few times," Crouch told TNT Sports. "I think he deserves a shot, I have to say.

"There’s been a lot talk around Sanchez, a few mistakes, he looks nervy at times. Every time I’ve seen him [Jorgensen] play, he’s not put a foot wrong."

Joe Cole stopped short of suggesting Sanchez should lose his place, but also sang the praises of Jorgensen. The ex-Chelsea believes the young shotstopper's approach will see him push for a place in Maresca's starting XI however.

Filip Jorgensen impressed for Chelsea away to Heidenheim.

"He’s one of those goalies where you don’t hear his name, there’s nothing flashy, he gets the job done," Cole added.

"What’s interesting is that although it’s been a canter for Chelsea this competition, he’s faced a lot of shots, so he’s getting tested and he’s producing moments. Good positioning, consistent, he’ll be pushing for a start."

Chelsea boss Maresca admitted that chances could be on the horizon for his team usually reserved for football outside of the Premier League.

"Filip did a very good game, Christo [Nkunku] the same," he said following the game. "We have a game on Sunday and then on Wednesday. We have nine or 10 games in December, so it is more or less a game every two or three days. They are going to get chances so they need to be ready."
