Newcastle United will have Dan Burn back from suspension for Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace - but two players still remain at risk.

Any player who receives five cautions in the opening 19 league fixtures is handed an automatic one-match suspension. After the game, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted Burn’s absence was a blow after Lloyd Kelly failed to grasp his opportunity.

“Yeah he was a big miss,” said Howe. “You see the first goal and I think Dan’s presence helps us in those situations for sure. His leadership qualities on the pitch can’t be underestimated, he’s an organiser and a really good communicator with his backline and midfield. Certainly my initial assessment is that we missed him.”

Meanwhile, Joelinton and Fabian Schar continue to walk a disciplinary tightrope as they too are just one yellow card away from a ban.

Schar and Joelinton must avoid any punishment until matchday 20 - the visit to Tottenham Hotspur on January 2, 2025 - in order to avoid suspension. Should either player be booked against Palace, they will the St James’ Park clash against Liverpool four days later.

After the 19-game mark, the threshold changes to 10 bookings, 32 games and a two-match ban. Any player shown 15 bookings over the course of the season is handed a three-match ban but no player has ever been cautioned that many times during a single Premier League campaign.
