Premier League pundit Alan Shearer has predicted a scrappy win for Manchester United ahead of their weekend clash against Everton at Old Trafford. Having registered his first win as the head coach against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday in the Europa Conference League, Ruben Amorim will now want to bag his debut victory in the Premier League as well.
So far, the Portuguese coach has drawn 1-1 against Ipswich Town and won 3-2 against Bodo/Glimt. Predicting a scrappy win for United, Shearer said (via Metro):
"After the first two minutes of Amorim’s first game you thought ‘here we go’ but it all went a bit flat after two or three minutes and I thought they were fortunate to come away with a point."
He added:
"He’s had a few days to work on the system and they’ve played in Europe on Thursday, but I think with the home crowd, Man United will have too much for Everton, although it won’t be easy. It’ll be tough but they may just scrape the three points."
Prediction: Man United win.
Shearer's predictions alluded to the fact that United began brightly in both games, scoring early in the opening exchanges but then failed to flatter for the majority of the game. They are currently 12th in the table with 16 points after 12 games (Four of each - wins, draws, and losses with a goal difference of zero).
Ruben Amorim speaks about Manchester United's 3-2 win
The Portuguese coach oversaw his first win in a match that swung both ways. Speaking after the game, he said (via Sky Sports):
"I think we improve different things since the last game. I know it's a different competition, different team, but we improve with the ball. We control the tempo more with the ball, we push the team a little bit more higher, we create more chances."
He added:
"We should kill the game before the end. You suffer two transitions. I think we need to improve on that because it was like runs, it was like a physical thing, one against one. You have to improve on that, but I like some things that the team did today."
Amorim was also touched by the welcome given to him by the home supporters in his first game at Old Trafford. He said:
"It was special because half of the stadium doesn't know me. You can say I came from Portugal, and half of the stadium doesn't know me."
Amorim said:
"I have done nothing for this club yet, but the way they support me in the beginning, I felt that I'm not alone. I'm like one of them now, and it was really special. I hope not to disappoint my supporters."
