Paul Merson has claimed that Martin Odegaard is as crucial to Arsenal's success as Rodri is to Manchester City. The reigning champions are currently missing their Spanish midfielder due to a long-term injury sustained at the start of the season.
Rodri's influence is significant, with City's winning percentage taking a hit when the Euro 2024 winner is absent. Their current struggles have been somewhat attributed to Rodri's absence as they endure a six-game winless streak.
On the other hand, Arsenal looked back to their best in their resounding victory over Sporting, with Odegaard returning to orchestrate the play. The Norwegian captain's absence was noticeable, with Arsenal struggling to create in the final third without him in the lineup.
Odegaard's fitness will be key if Arsenal are to challenge for silverware. Speaking on Sky Sports, via the Mirror Merson said: "A brilliant performance against Sporting Lisbon. Martin Odegaard makes the difference. We talk about Man City and Rodri. It's the same with Odegaard. Odegaard makes things happen. He knits it together for them. He brings the best out of Bukayo Saka as well – even more out of him – given he is already an amazing player.
"With Declan Rice and Thomas Partey sitting in front of the back four, he can bomb on. They've got four very, very good defenders. A good goalkeeper. They're a good team – but they have got to stay fit. As long as they stay fit, Arsenal will be on a roll."
Odegaard continues to shine brightly at Arsenal, providing a consistent supply of goals and assists. Since his return, the Gunners have secured two wins from three games.
Meanwhile, Manchester City, lagging eight points behind the Premier League leaders Liverpool, are seeking ways to compensate for the absence of Rodri. He's been central to their midfield dominance and has expressed his firm intent to get back before the season concludes.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, he said: "My target is to come back this season. I don't give up on this season, [but] I don't want to make any mistakes. My target is six or seven months. I am doing much better than I thought. I am enjoying the rest, if it possible to say it that way.
