Ruud van Nistelrooy has got the Leicester City job

New Leicester City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has expressed his 'pride and excitement' after landing his first job as a full-time Premier League manager.

Van Nistelrooy, 48, recently left Manchester United after enjoying four games in charge of the Red Devils on an interim basis and has immediately got himself back into work by taking over at Leicester, who sacked Steve Cooper this week. The Dutchman, whose only previously managerial role came with PSV Eindhoven for the 2022-23 season, returned to England last summer to be part of Erik ten Hag's coaching staff at United.

Putting pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year contract, Van Nistelrooy will take charge following Sunday's Premier League trip to Brentford. Speaking after Leicester's announcement on Friday, the former United coach and striker declared: "I'm proud, I'm excited. Everybody that I speak to about Leicester City Football Club is enthusiastic.

"They have great stories about the quality of the people working at the club, the supporters and, of course, the recent history of the Club is impressive. I'm excited to start and to get to know everyone and give everything I can for the Football Club."

Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha added: "It is my pleasure to welcome Ruud to Leicester City. He joins a Club with a rich history, passionate supporters, and a talented squad, and we are all excited to see the impact he can have as we embark on this new chapter together.

"Ruud's experience, knowledge, and winning mentality will undoubtedly bring great value to us, and we look forward to supporting him in achieving success for our fans and our Club."

The Foxes will be led by first-team coach Ben Dawson as well as Danny Alcock and Andy Hughes for their game at Brentford. It's currently unknown whether Van Nistelrooy will bring in his own coaching staff and take the same approach as new United boss Ruben Amorim.

That's what resulted in Van Nistelrooy's departure from Old Trafford, 18 years after he first walked away as a player. Upon leaving United earlier this month, the former Real Madrid striker wrote on X: "To everyone at Manchester United Football Club, in particular the backroom staff, the players and the fans.
