Arsenal loanee now expected to leave permanently

Nuno Tavares’ loan move from Arsenal to Lazio is expected to turn permanent in 2025, according to a report.

James McNicholas reports for The Athletic that Nuno Tavares’ loan move to Lazio is expected to convert a permanent deal.

The news is hardly surprising, with Tavares impressing in Serie A and his loan deal containing a purchase clause, but this is just further confirmation that the move is heading in that direction.

As it stands, Tavares is fighting to return to fitness after suffering a hamstring injury with Portugal over the international break. He’s already missed two Lazio games since then, failing to make the squad against Bologna on Sunday and against Ludogorets on Thursday.

Lazio confirmed a low-grade muscle injury to the hamstring of Tavares’ left thigh last week, adding that he had already started treatment and would be monitored on a daily basis as they look to assess when he’ll be fit to return.

But before that setback, Tavares had been one of the stars of his team, and arguably one of the best-performing players in the entire division.

With Tavares’ eight assists in nine Serie A matches, only Marcus Thuram’s six assists in 13 games for Inter Milan even comes close.

That form led to Tavares making his debut for Portugal during the November international break, coming on as a substitute in their win over Poland. But he picked up an injury in training just days later.

Tavares’ loan deal includes an obligation to buy for €9m (£7.6m) assuming the player meets certain clauses in his contract – most likely appearance clauses. So a long-term injury could be disruptive to his future, but there’s no suggestion of a serious problem at this stage.

The player will be on a deal until June 2029 if he signs, and the contract also has a sell-on clause reportedly worth more than 25% of a future fee.
