Southampton star Paul Onuachu has been nominated for a FIFA Puskas award, for his incredible back-heel goal, scored for Trabzonspor.
It is rare that Southampton players are recognised for their individual brilliance. However, this only makes the feeling sweeter, whenever a Saint is nominated for an individual award.
Southampton striker Paul Onuachu is probably the last player anybody would expect to be nominated for an individual award. I mean this as no disrespect to the Nigerian striker, it is simply because he hardly plays for Southampton.
However, Paul Onuachu has been recognised for a prestigious individual honour, one of the honours which gets the most recognition and anticipation in a calendar year.
For 2023-2024, Paul Onuachu has been recognised as a nominee for the FIFA Puskas Award. His incredible backheel goal last season for Trabzonspor, scored against Konyaspor, is up for the award.
Playing on loan in Turkey last season, Paul Onuachu scored the best goal of his career to date. It was the winning goal and one which required impressive acrobatic ability and improvisational skills. He jumped in the air, bended his body, and scored a backheel volley.
Below, the goal can be watched. If you are like me and appreciate an acrobatic goal which cannot be replicated, then you will watch it many times over. It is truly an incredible goal and deserving to be up there with the very best.
Going forward, we hope to see Paul Onuachu given more opportunities to prove himself at Southampton. He made his first Premier League start of the season against Liverpool last week, so this could be a sign of things to come.
As it stands, Paul Onuachu is linked with a move away from Southampton. However, this could soon change with a strong showing between now and the January transfer window. It is pretty clear that he has incredible technical ability, after all.
