Arne Slot told what 'quite incredible' Liverpool transfer will bring to Anfield

Giorgi Mamardashvili in Nations League action for Georgia

Liverpool-bound Giorgi Mamardashvili has impressed for Georgia and Valencia

Georgia coach David Webb has described Giorgi Mamardashvili as a "perfect fit" for Liverpool as the Valencia player prepares for his Anfield move.

Mamardashvili, who impressed for his country at Euro 2024, became Arne Slot's first Liverpool signing over the summer. He won't arrive until 2025, though, and remains first choice for current club Valencia in the meantime.

The 24-year-old has been one of the few bright sparks on the field for Los Che, who find themselves in a relegation battle in La Liga. Reds fans have been keeping an eye on the £25m man, and were particularly impressed by a double save he pulled off to save a point against Getafe in October.

Former Tottenham coach Webb worked as Willy Sagnol's number two at the Euros as Georgia made a surprise run to the round of 16. And he has let Liverpool know what they can expect from their new man as Mamardashvili attempts to challenge for a starting spot.

"Giorgi just feels like a perfect fit for Liverpool," Webb told GiveMeSport. "He's an outstanding shot stopper. He commands his box. He's very athletic, not only big but strong as well.

"And one of his best attributes, which I suppose Liverpool fans may not know, is his character. He's got a very, very strong character. He's an extremely hard worker and is determined to get right to the top.

"Although he joined Valencia from Dinamo Tbilisi, he was on loan at Locomotive Tbilisi, a relatively small club in Georgia, before moving to Spain," Webb continued. "To go from there to a regular LaLiga starter in 12 months is quite incredible. And part of that success is down to his character and mental resilience."

Mamardashvili will join Liverpool from Valencia in 2025

Liverpool have been without first-choice keeper Alisson since he picked up a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace in early October. Caoimhin Kelleher has been an able deputy, saving a Kylian Mbappe penalty in a Champions League win against Real Madrid, and Slot has also had praise for the Irish international.

"I am expecting every player wants to be the No.1, not only in the goalkeeper position, but in every position. It’s always up to the player if he can accept his role," Slot told reporters ahead of Sunday's match against Manchester City.

"At this moment Caoimhin has accepted his role from the start of the season until now in a great manner, when he didn’t play but also when he did play, so it’s far too early to talk about what can happen next season. I want every player that they want to play every game. It would be completely wrong if he would’ve come over to me and said, ‘I like it that I’m on the bench today.’

"That’s completely normal with him and all the others. But then it’s always about the attitude if you don’t play and that has been outstanding."
