Beating Real Madrid is never a small accomplishment, and that certainly holds true for Liverpool’s 2-0 win over the Spanish Giants on Wednesday night. It was the first time any Liverpool side beat Real since 2009, and that win put the Reds top of both leagues, Premier and Champions.
However, there is no rest for Liverpool as they enter into a busy December. This is a message that manager Arne Slot wanted to convey to players and supporters alike in his match program column.
“It is not new to them to be challenging the likes of City and Real Madrid,” [Slot wrote.](https://go.redirectingat.com?id=66960X1516590&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.liverpoolfc.com%2Fnews%2Farne-slot-best-teams-dont-admire-their-work-they-keep-pushing&referrer=sbnation.com&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fliverpooloffside.sbnation.com%2Fliverpool-fc-news-coverage%2F2024%2F11%2F30%2F24309388%2Fliverpool-fc-team-news-arne-slot-real-madrid-manchester-city-match-program-epl-title-challenge)
“It is what they have done for some time. But the challenge for them – for us – is not only to keep challenging, it is to show that we can continue improving in everything that we do. This is what the very best teams do. They do not stop and admire their work. They keep on pushing themselves.”
Liverpool could not have reasonably hoped for a better start to Slot’s reign. Liverpool have now won 17 of their first 19 matches, which is good enough for an 8-point advantage over Manchester City, which could be extended to 11 if the Reds do the decent thing tomorrow.
But regardless of tomorrow’s results, there will still be 25 matches to go in the league, including 6 in December alone. In Europe, Liverpool will have a minimum of 10 matches more, should they make the final.
This season is far from over, and there is no time to pat ourselves on the back for winning battles in a much larger war.
By the sounds of it, Slot isn’t resting on his laurels, and hopefully the players follow his lead.
