Local media delivers verdict on Chelsea loanee Alfie Gilchrist after last night's Sheffield United performance

Chelsea youngster Alfie Gilchrist is getting plenty of first-team minutes during his season-long loan in the Championship with Sheffield United.

Alfie Gilchrist, 21, is an exciting young defender to come through the ranks in the Chelsea academy.

He’s played 17 senior games for the Blues after getting a chance under Mauricio Pochettino last season, but the club decided the best path for his development was a spell out on loan in the 2024/25 campaign.

Chelsea legend John Terry said Gilchrist reminds him of himself because he puts 100 per cent into everything that he does.

Sheffield United moved to the top of the Championship table with a 1-0 home win over Sunderland on Friday night.

Gilchrist, the Chelsea loanee, completed 90 minutes for the Blades in yesterday’s league victory. He started the game at right-back before moving into a centre-back position.

Local media praised the Blues-owned youngster after his Sheffield United performance.

Sheffield Star wrote: “Alfie Gilchrist – 7/10. Started at right-back and ended in the middle after Souttar’s red card, which may be the role he plays at West Brom at the weekend with Ahmedhodzic also out. Some great blocks down the right against Sunderland’s lively threats.”

It was another solid outing from Gilchrist in the Championship, who’s showing his quality in England’s second tier.

There’s no real surprise that the versatile defender is doing so well in Sheffield because he didn’t look out of place in Chelsea colours. In fact, Jamie Redknapp said Gilchrist was “excellent” against Tottenham last season.
