Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has lauded the influence of captain Martin Odegaard following the midfielder’s return from a lengthy injury absence, as well as the impressive contributions of defender Jurrien Timber.
Odegaard, 25, was sidelined for 12 matches after suffering an ankle injury during international duty with Norway in September. Since his return, the Arsenal skipper has seamlessly reintegrated into the starting lineup, delivering standout performances in recent fixtures.
After a cameo appearance in Arsenal’s Champions League clash against Inter Milan earlier this month, Odegaard has started the last three games. He assisted the opening goal in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea, set up Bukayo Saka’s opener in a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, and played a key role in Arsenal’s 5-1 Champions League triumph over Sporting Lisbon, winning the penalty for Saka’s goal.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal’s game against West Ham United, Arteta highlighted Odegaard’s dedication during his rehabilitation.

“The way he prepares himself and how much work he put in with the physios and medical team was exceptional,” Arteta said. “He’s returned in the best possible condition to face the critical period of the season and has hit the ground running.

“He’s been outstanding since the Chelsea game and very consistent in the last few matches. Good players who are so reliable and consistent can elevate the team and make those around them better. That’s a huge quality of Martin, and yes, we missed him.”
Arteta also took the opportunity to praise Jurrien Timber, who has excelled in Arsenal’s defence, particularly in recent weeks. The 23-year-old Dutch international has started the last seven matches, including the most recent two at right back in place of the injured Ben White.
“We know what he can produce,” Arteta said. “He’s a player with exceptional qualities and a lot of leadership. The courage, intention, and purpose he plays with are very contagious.
“He’s still a player with many layers and levels to unlock, and I’m very happy to have him.”
