Joe Thomas aired his surprise after Everton youngster Braiden Graham was shown a yellow card for supposedly diving in the Under-21s game against Liverpool on Saturday.

The two teams faced one another in a Merseyside derby and Liverpool Echo journalist Thomas reported from Finch Farm that the 17-year-old attacker was brought down in the box by a challenge from Reds goalkeeper Bailey Hall.

However, writing via his personal X account (30 November), Thomas suggested the referee got the decision wrong.

“Wow. Graham booked for diving as he goes down under Hall’s challenge. Brilliant break + through ball from Clarke and Graham looked to have rounded the keeper,” he wrote.

“Had no reason to dive, and already stayed on his feet once when it looked like he was fouled in the box. Tough call that.”

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

Sean Dyche could look towards the Everton academy as his potential saviours

On paper, things may not look as bleak this season compared to last when the Toffees were deducted points on two occasions due to two separate breaches of the Premier League’s PSR rules, but it still feels like Sean Dyche’s future should come under scrutiny.

Since the start of the term, the former Burnley boss has had his future questions and while he’s pulled off some positive results here and there, it feels like these have been too far apart from one another to create any consistency within the squad.

Players such as Roman Dixon and Harrison Armstrong have already been called upon by the 53-year-old to make their senior team debuts.

Youssef Chermiti is now also edging closer to a return so it feels like the Toffees’ academy could prove crucial to saving Dyche’s job.

There is plenty of time left in the season for Dyche to turn things around and make them better at the club, but the changes will have to come into action soon, otherwise he could find himself without a job once The Friedkin Group take over.

In other Everton news, a “concern” has been shared about Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the expiration of his contract edges closer.
