Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes that Raphael Varane was a better defender than Chelsea great John Terry. Varane only hung up his boots on September 25, 2024, after enjoying a glittering career for club and country.
Ferdinand, who now works as a pundit, was regarded as one of the finest defenders of his era. The former England international played with and against numerous top defenders during his illustrious career.
At Manchester United, he paired up with the likes of greats like Japp Stam and Nemanja Vidic. Meanwhile for England, Ferdinand played alongside top defenders like John Terry, Jamie Carragher, and Ledley King among others.
Speaking to Mail SPORT, Ferdinand was asked to name the better defender between John Terry and Raphael Varane. The pundit picked former Manchester United defender Varane over Terry despite sharing the pitch with the latter on numerous occasions.

Just like Ferdinand, John Terry is regarded as one of the best English central defenders of all time. He spent the best phase of his career at Chelsea and captained both the Blues and England for a long time.
Terry made 717 appearances for Chelsea over the years while also making 36 appearances for Aston Villa. He won 17 trophies with the Blues and will forever be remembered by the Stamford Bridge faithful for his contributions.
Meanwhile, Varane certainly did not have the longevity of Terry having retired at the age of 31 but is one of the most decorated defenders of all time. He won 18 trophies for Real Madrid and two for Manchester United while also winning two trophies for France. He is a four-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid and also won the FIFA World Cup with France in 2018.
