The Scotland international was forced to miss EURO 2024 after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee back in May.

He made his return to the starting XI in this week’s Champions League home defeat to Lille, leaving them with just one point from five games in the competition.

There had been reports of a move to the Premier League before that setback, but he seems in no rush to leave Italy.

“We know there was interest from British clubs before his injury, but Lewis believes he has unfinished business in Serie A,” agent William McMurdo told Calciomercato.it.

“He loves Italy and it would need to be an exceptional opportunity for him to leave this country at this time.”

Bologna showed their faith in Ferguson by signing him to a new contract just weeks after his devastating knee injury.

“Lewis was delighted to sign a new contract with Bologna. The club has been great for him and the fans tremendous since day one,” added the agent.

If he was to remain in Serie A, it would not necessarily be at the Stadio Dall’Ara, as it has been rumoured he could reunite with Thiago Motta at Juventus.

“There will always be rumours about Juve and other clubs being interested in him. He is proud to be the captain of Bologna and will continue to give 100 % to the club.

“Lewis is a dedicated professional with huge ambitions. He has great self-belief and knows exactly what he wants to achieve in football. No doubt, Lewis will raise his level this season.”
