Warren Barton says what every Newcastle United fan is thinking after drawing with Crystal Palace

Former Newcastle United defender Warren Barton has summed up the Magpies’ 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace perfectly.

Newcastle United were poor against West Ham, and desperately needed a response at Selhurst Park. That was going to be easier said than done, as Newcastle’s scoring record at Selhurst Park is poor.

But the Magpies ended their goal drought in South London, with an unlikely player giving Eddie Howe’s side a 1-0 lead.

An own goal by Marc Guehi opened the scoring, which is incredibly ironic after Newcastle tried so hard to sign him during the summer. They wanted to make him Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever, but were unable to strike a deal.

Sadly, Guehi’s impact on the game was not over. He provided the assist for Daniel Munoz, as Oliver Glasner’s side scored in stoppage time to make it Crystal Palace 1 Newcastle United 1.

Warren Barton sums up Crystal Palace 1 Newcastle 1 perfectly

On the balance of play, Newcastle United did not deserve to win at Selhurst Park.

However, the nature of the Eagles’ equaliser means it feels like two points lost rather than one point gained.

That is the view of former Toon defender Warren Barton, who has summed up how pretty much every Newcastle United fan will be feeling after Saturday’s result.

Newcastle United miss out on confidence boost ahead of Liverpool

Newcastle United did not play very well against Crystal Palace. The Magpies struggled to create chances, with Eddie Howe’s players not having a single shot on target. The fact that Newcastle had to rely on an own goal speaks volumes.

And this comes after Newcastle had a similar issue against West Ham.

After two games in which Newcastle arguably could have picked up six points, they have only won one. Meanwhile, the players will be lacking confidence after conceding such a late equaliser.

The timing of the Crystal Palace goal stings. Newcastle were so close to winning, but now a draw feels like a defeat.

That is not ideal given who Newcastle United fact next – the Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Eddie Howe has never beaten the Reds since his arrival on Tyneside, while his task is even harder given how well Arne Slot’s side are playing.

A win over Crystal Palace would have given Newcastle a lift ahead of facing Liverpool, but now there will be a sense of dread from Toon fans.

The one positive is that Alexander Isak has not suffered a muscle injury, after he was forced off in the 22nd minute at Selhurst Park.
