Report: Why several of Newcastle's elite players have been unsettled this season

It’s difficult to know what to make of Newcastle United at times.

The run of three consecutive victories before the international break underlined what a good team Newcastle can be at their very best, though the 2-0 defeat to West Ham on Monday brought Eddie Howe’s side crashing back down to earth.

Saturday’s draw at Crystal Palace, meanwhile, proved the latest frustration.

Indeed, it’s hard to know where Newcastle are going. Howe has certainly not been helped by a lack of investment from owners PIF, even if the decision not to spend in a world where any potential PSR breaches result in points deductions is understandable.

It seems the club have hit a ceiling right now, given the financial restrictions in the Premier League. They reportedly still need to sell players in order to unlock further funds, albeit a major departure is not seemingly necessary at this stage.

While the early part of the story under the Newcastle United owners was one of a rapid-fire improvement, things do appear to have stalled of late. Still capable of big results on the pitch, the difficulty they’re having in improving the squad is harming their progress.

The fact key players have been linked away clearly hasn’t helped either. Alexander Isak is frequently being tipped for an exit, while Anthony Gordon was said to have been tempted by the idea of a move to Liverpool before eventually signing a new contract.

Now, some further insight has emerged.

The report adds that Howe has had a tough job in keeping them focused when they know they can earn more at other teams who could perhaps offer more guaranteed chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

Newcastle might have to make a major decision soon

At some point, Newcastle might have to sell someone such as Isak to unlock further funds. The squad, despite Howe’s best efforts, has looked tired this season and there’s only so long the Newcastle United manager can keeping making tweaks to it before it needs a revamp.

Clearly, no one would want that but how long can they keep going on like this?

It’s a sad reflection on the restrictions teams like Newcastle face…
