West Ham United went into Saturday’s game looking to build on their 2-0 win against Newcastle United.
However, the Hammers fell to a humiliating 2-5 loss to Arsenal at the London Stadium.
West Ham were 4-0 down after 36 minutes, with Gabriel Magalhaes, Leandro Trossard, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz earning their names on the scoresheet for the Gunners.
Two goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Emerson Palmieri offered hopes of a stunning comeback for the hosts, but it was quickly dashed after Bukayo Saka restored their big lead by converting his spot-kick just before half-time.
Both sides failed to extend the scoreline in the second-half, as Arsenal comfortably won the game in the end.
Lukasz Fabianski was part of the team that conceded five goals. While there wasn’t much he could have done for the first four, the 39-year-old was completely at fault for the Gunners’ last goal.
Instead of the ball, Fabianski punched Gabriel in the head, conceding a penalty that was converted by Saka.
The former Poland international denied Martin Odegaard at the hour mark, but he endured a torrid game overall.
Max Kilman, usually so reliable for West Ham, also endured a tough outing in front of the home supporters. The summer arrival completely missed his clearance, allowing Havertz to slot home Arsenal’s fourth goal.
The defender won all his ground duels, but lost possession on seven occasions and completed just three of his seven long balls.
Lucas Paqueta came into Saturday’s contest on the back of an excellent display against Newcastle, but he completed failed to repeat the feat yesterday.
The Brazilian dangled his leg out to bring down Saka in the box, allowing Odegaard to put his side three goals ahead.
Paqueta also lost possession on six occasions, and completed 21 of his 26 passes. He made two fouls and was dribbled past twice.
